Vincent Neil Emerson Birmingham Concert reviews
"CHICAGO!" Full of Razzle Dazzle!
I had a slightly different experience at CHICAGO compared to most people who have only watched the movie. The secret about Mary Sunshine was known to me. The reveal of the secret made the audience go wild, but I won't disclose it here. You'll have to see the show for yourself. It was an evening of "razzle, dazzle" FUN overall! John O'Hurley, as sleazy lawyer Billy Flynn, did not overshadow the remarkable talents of Bonnie Langford as Roxie Hart and Terra C. MacLeod as Velma Kelly, despite being billed as "Starring In." Terra's portrayal of Velma, in my opinion, was a bit understated, but her dancing skills were impressive, establishing her as a formidable actress, though I wish she had added more depth to the role. John O'Hurley's portrayal of Billy was excellent - sleazy and only concerned about love, he was imposing and visually appealing, with his striking shock of gray hair! Tom Riis Farrell, playing Roxie's downtrodden husband Amos Hart, delivered just the right amount of anguish in his performance. His rendition of "Mr. Cellophane" was appropriately pitiful, and his singing voice was exceptional. Carol Woods, as Matron "MAMA" Morton, was bold, brassy, and possessed a voice that could evoke envy in many. While she was commendable, I preferred a more straightforward rendition of "When You're Good to Mama" rather than her personalized interpretation. D. Vogel, as Mary Sunshine, displayed remarkable acting skills and an impressive vocal range. The ensemble was flawless, excelling in dance and portraying multiple roles with distinction. Their acting abilities truly shined. The orchestra showcased exceptional talent, and the set design, featuring only the orchestra behind the actors and strategically placed chairs to represent various locations, was entertaining and engaging. However, the standout of the show was Bonnie Langford as Roxie! Her passion, talent, and dynamism radiated from the stage! Whenever this fiery red-headed performer appeared, the show's energy soared, despite the already formidable talent on display! I cannot express enough how much I enjoyed her performance! Many thanks to the cast, orchestra, and all involved in bringing this show to life, and to Broadway in Tucson for bringing it to "The Baked Apple"!
